Habitat for Humanity Breaks Ground on 70th Home.
CFMC board trustees and staff celebrated a groundbreaking ceremony with partners, The United Way of Decatur & Mid-Illinois, Romano Company, and The Decatur Area Habitat For Humanity & ReStore to mark construction on the 70th Decatur Habitat for Humanity home on Wednesday.
An important milestone for Decatur, Habitat for Humanity and our community, the 70th home will be built on Cantrell St.
We were joined by UW board members and CFMC board trustees, Vice Chair Dr. Dana Ray-Dotson, Secretary Tony Wilkins, Rich Kaczynski, Steve Grohne, and Pastor Matt Samuels. Dr. Dana Ray-Dotson gave remarks about the importance of supporting neighborhood revitalization and what it means to provide area families affordable places to live.
UW Board Chair Rachel Strode spoke about the uniqueness of this project. Philip Romano, Habitat board President, shared the history and growth of our local habitat organization and details on the Romano family’s commitment to helping our community.
Habitat Executive Director Ed Smith spoke about how families are selected for homes and the equity each family has vested - 300 construction hours and monthly mortgage payments on a secured mortgage without having to pay interest.
We were also joined by Ellen Hearn Executive Director with Decatur Block by Block, a nonprofit focused on neighborhood revitalization, and representatives from Busey Bank, who are partnering with Habitat on financing for the home.
In the coming months a family will be selected for the home and they along with the partner organizations, will come together to volunteer to help make this house a home.
