Department of Chemistry: Autosampler for Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectroscope (ICP) Inductively coupled plasma – atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP) is routinely used in industry and research for elemental analysis at part per billion (ppb) detection limits. For context, one ppb is roughly equivalent to one drop of water in a 10,000 gallon swimming pool. ICP allows students to analyze most elements in the period table and therefore allows for a variety of analyses. For example, this spring general chemistry students analyzed potassium and iron content in a compound they synthesized, while senior students analyzed Lake Decatur water for toxic elements such as lead and arsenic. (Fortunately, neither toxic element was present above the instrument’s detection limit!) ICP is commonly operated with an autosampler, which is a robot that introduces samples for analysis. The autosampler is important because it will allow students to learn in an environment consistent with their future careers and facilitates efficient sampling in large lab sections. An autosampler would allow for ICP to more easily be implemented in undergraduate research where manual sample introduction is prohibitive due to large numbers of samples. We expect at least 120 STEM students will annually benefit from the acquisition of an ICP autosampler. |

Lab Research Study: Potential Treatments for Rhabdomyosarcoma Cancer Rhabdomyosarcoma is a debilitating cancer found primarily in children and teens, especially in children under age 10. This lab research student study, under the direction of MU Associate Professor of Biology Jennifer Schroeder, seeks to evaluate cardiac glycosides as a potential treatment for this disease. This research is conducted by a Millikin student who lost his young brother to rhabdomyosarcoma. Funding is requested to purchase the materials needed to complete the research. |

Long-Vanderburg Scholars Program Scholarship for Macon County Students The Long-Vanderburg Program is named in honor of Millikin's first two African-American graduates, Fred Long and Marian Vanderburg. The scholarship is renewable for up to four years as long as the student maintains a 3.0/4.0 cumulative GPA and actively participates in the program. |

Research Study: Effects of Metolachlor on Development Beyond extensive studies of the effects on frogs from exposure to atrazine, a widely used herbicide to control broadleaf and grassy weeds, by Tyrone Hayes (Hayes 2010, 2011), the amount of published, repeatable research examining other pesticides in a variety of model systems is minimal. This lab research student study, under the direction of MU Associate Professor of Biology Jennifer Schroeder, seeks to advance this research by testing the effects of metolachlor, a pesticide widely used in Illinois, on the early development of tadpoles. Funding is requested to purchase the materials needed to complete the research. |

Research Study: Thyroid Cancer Treatment without Surgical Removal of Entire Thyroid This study evaluates the possibility of a medical thyroid cancer treatment that does not require removal of the entire thyroid for patients with less severe cases of thyroid cancer. This research is conducted by a Millikin student who is currently in treatment for thyroid cancer. Funding is requested to purchase the materials needed to complete the research. |

Staley Library: Click Mini Scanner with Text to Speech and Searchable PDF (OCR) Staley Library’s 2015 model Click Mini scanner has been highly used by students, faculty, staff, and community users of the library to scan and email documents in support of their research, work, and personal needs, but will be reaching end of life for the model within the next year. A new model machine would allow continuation of scanning services and add two accessibility features. Text to speech will make scanned documents readable by screen reading software for those with visual impairments and searchable PDF (OCR) will make scanned documents full text searchable. |
