Community Wish List

The Community Foundation prides itself on bringing people who care together with causes that matter.

The Community Wish List assists the Community Foundation of Macon County in our programming because if we don’t know the needs of our community, we can’t connect donors with those causes. We will update this list quarterly, sharing specific wishes from the Macon County Legacy nonprofit members.

African-American Biographies and Picture Books
Decatur Public Schools Foundation — District 61 schools seek to ensure that library selections for students are reflective of their community and representative of young people of all ethnicities. Intentionally providing titles that speak to these issues contributes to building dialogue between students of every background. Cost is per-building to provide age-appropriate sets for each age group: Kindergarten through 2nd Grade volumes; 3rd grade through 5th; and 6th, 7th, 8th Grades. The Decatur Public Schools have 12 buildings serving these students. (Five traditional elementary buildings, six specialty Kindergarten through 8th Grade buildings and one traditional middle school.)

Department of Chemistry: Autosampler for Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectroscope (ICP)
Millikin University — Inductively coupled plasma – atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP) is routinely used in industry and research for elemental analysis at part per billion (ppb) detection limits. For context, one ppb is roughly equivalent to one drop of water in a 10,000 gallon swimming pool. ICP allows students to analyze most elements in the period table and therefore allows for a variety of analyses. For example, this spring general chemistry students analyzed potassium and iron content in a compound they synthesized, while senior students analyzed Lake Decatur water for toxic elements such as lead and arsenic. (Fortunately, neither toxic element was present above the instrument’s detection limit!) ICP is commonly operated with an autosampler, which is a robot that introduces samples for analysis. The autosampler is important because it will allow students to learn in an environment consistent with their future careers and facilitates efficient sampling in large lab sections. An autosampler would allow for ICP to more easily be implemented in undergraduate research where manual sample introduction is prohibitive due to large numbers of samples. We expect at least 120 STEM students will annually benefit from the acquisition of an ICP autosampler.

Operating Room Ultrasound Equipment (Fujifilm Sonosite Visualization Tools)
Decatur Memorial Foundation — This ultrasound equipment is utilized by general and obstetric surgeons and is used to aid in various surgeries like port insertions, breast reconstruction, and all gynecological procedures. With increased patient flow (especially in obstetrics due to HSHS closure), surgeons have identified the need for an additional state-of-the-art ultrasound machine. This system has the capability to evolve with hospital needs, has a customizable smart touch screen, and will help produce better clinical outcomes.

Research Study: Effects of Metolachlor on Development
Millikin University — Beyond extensive studies of the effects on frogs from exposure to atrazine, a widely used herbicide to control broadleaf and grassy weeds, by Tyrone Hayes (Hayes 2010, 2011), the amount of published, repeatable research examining other pesticides in a variety of model systems is minimal. This lab research student study, under the direction of MU Associate Professor of Biology Jennifer Schroeder, seeks to advance this research by testing the effects of metolachlor, a pesticide widely used in Illinois, on the early development of tadpoles. Funding is requested to purchase the materials needed to complete the research.

By adding a smart board, the Conservation District can provide the staff the necessary tools to offer more programs simultaneously. Staley Library: Click Mini Scanner with Text to Speech and Searchable PDF (OCR)
Millikin University — Staley Library’s 2015 model Click Mini scanner has been highly used by students, faculty, staff, and community users of the library to scan and email documents in support of their research, work, and personal needs, but will be reaching end of life for the model within the next year. A new model machine would allow continuation of scanning services and add two accessibility features. Text to speech will make scanned documents readable by screen reading software for those with visual impairments and searchable PDF (OCR) will make scanned documents full text searchable.

Stephen Decatur Middle School Necessity Stations
Decatur Public Schools Foundation — The purpose of these areas is to provide personal items that the students of SDMS might need immediately at school or take home to use. We provide shampoo/conditioner, soap/body wash, deodorant, toothpaste/brushes, combs/brushes/picks, scrunchies/hair ties, socks, hand lotion, lip balm, pads/tampons, school supplies, and anything else they may need upon request. Necessity Stations also provide healthy snacks they can grab throughout the day if they are hungry. The smaller size/not quite travel size items are what the kids feel comfortable taking because they can easily put them in a pocket, and no one is the wiser. However, if they need a larger quantity at home, counselors do have backpacks that can be filled with larger items to send home with them. To fully fund for the year, it would take approximately $2,000 for two stations, one on each end of the building.
